This is an interesting twist: I never thought of the 
barrels.  What do the barrels look like?  Are they the
little platsic ones about a foot high?

Why not use the PVC pipes, sealed at both ends, lashed
together to form a series of vertical cylinders.  The
cuylinders would be on either side of the sub, linked
by straps under it?  No, that's as far as I have gotten
in this logic.
