Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Reference Material
Hi,
Here is a brief description of top five design(?) books:
Concepts in Submarine Design by Roy Burcher and Louis Rydill
Textbook on how to approach the design of a submarine.
Their experience is on British diesel-electric military
subs so their mindset and examples are for large subs.
Good on discussing a systematic approach for designing
submarines.
Rules for Building and Classing Underwater Vehicles, Systems, and
Hyperbaric Facilities by American Bureau of Shipping & Affiliated Companies
Good for safety gothcha's and states questions a "safe" design
must meet. Doesn't tell you how to come up with the answers
or give you the math to do so. Kind of, you come with the design
with all the math and answers and if they answer the limits set
out in this book then ok.
Not so much a book on how to build a sub but a book on what limits
your design needs to meet.
Acrylic Plastic Viewports by Jerry D. Stachiw
Tells you almost anything you want to know about viewports.
Submarine Design by Ulrich Gabler
Much the same as Concepts in Submarine Design. As such both are
somewhat redundant.
Manned Submersibles by R. Frank Busby
Focus is on small commercial submersibles. Looks at a variety of
submersibles then in existance in the 1970's with examples
of design features taken from a variety of subs.
Again, no detailed math but a survey of what has been done to solve
specific problems with some ancedotal stories.
Good for showing you what has been done.
I would rate their importance:
1. Concepts in Submarine Design OR Submarine Design
2. Manned Submersibles (if you can find it)
3. Rules for Building and Classing Underwater Vehicles,
Systems, and Hyperbaric Facilities
4. Acrylic Plastic Viewports
5. Concepts in Submarine Design OR Submarine Design (which ever you
don't have yet)
Regards,
Ray
