I neer thought of that.
I presumed that communism fell because of the wine I was drinking.
My daughter was seven when she asked about the empty wine
bottle we kept. The bottle was the one we drank at our wedding;
we'd had none for ten years. So I took my little girl to the ABC
store, and we got some Hungarian cabernet sauvignon. She
didn't drink any, but my wife and I finished the bottle over the
next couple of weeks.
Over the next few months, I drank maybe three bottles of wine.
My wife, upon the event of the purchase of the next bottle, asked
me why I was "drinking so much."
I smiled, poured a glass, and explanined that Karl Marx wrote that
when the oppressed workers understood the value of their work,
they'd rise up and overthrow their evil masters. This could happen
to dictatorial communist regimes as well as to soft democratic
regimes. My wife just looked at me. I guess she figured I'd
lost my mind.
A couple of weeks later, the Berlin Wall came down. Communism
collapsed all over, except in China and in Cuba. I pulled my wife
in front of the TV so she could watch the wall fall, and I poured
myself a glass of wine. And I smiled, saying "Told you so."
Shortly after that, she asked me to leave. Marriages are funny things.
Submarine content? The collapse of the USSR has thrown Whiskey
and Foxtrot subs onto the open market.
No, it wasn't my proposal to make the movie: it was my drinking.
