Bingo!

I didn't recall her at all, but she's listed in the credits on the novel.

I'm on a mailing with fans of the TV series, and they froth at the mouth
when I mention either the movie or the book.    Richard Basehart is,
to them, the Ultimate Admiral and to acknowledge any other is a 
mortal sin.

The book has another woman in it.   She sabotages the sub and
dies when she hops in the shark pool after getting a radiation
overdose.
