You have torque and speed that go into the horsepower.  Electric motors
can produce much more torque than gas engines, though generally at lower
speeds giving them a lower horsepower.  Consider the 30hp Stanley Steamer,
it developed 2,500 ft-lbs of torque at 800 RPM.  There isn't a car on the
market(and I seriously doubt a single hot-rod in existance) that gets
2,500 ft-lbs of torque.  Yet, it only got 30hp because the engine couldn't
generally go over 1,000 RPM.  Torque is more important with most
applications than speed - that's why cars have transmissions.
