Re: Visit in June (Fwd)

Hi,

I am sitting in the parking lot nearby The Royal Navy Submarine
Museum in Gosport, England. I couldn't drive to the museum itself
due to renovation to a bridge that leads to the museum. I was
able to walk to the museum.

I spent close to an hour inside the X-24. :)))))) [big smile]

I took close to 70 pictures. When developed and digitised I'll put
the best on the web site. Maybe by the end of July or August.

Brian, do you want a set of prints?

I spent another 3 hours looking at all the exibits. The Museum is
in an expansion phase. Offciially called "The Royal Navy Submarine Museum
Centennial Appeal". They are trying to collect 1.5 million British Pounds to
fund a four phase project.

One of the phases is to drain the tank the HM Submarine No.1
(Holland 1) is in. The Holland 1, Britain's first submarine,
was lost on the way to the breakers when it broke its tow and sank
about 70 years ago.

It was found and brought to the surface but started to
fall apart due to chloride induced corrosion. So it has been in
a tank of a sodium carbonate solution to remove the chloride ions.
Now the museum wants to drain the tank and turn the tank into an
environmentally controlled viewing area for the public. Currently
you can see very little of the Holland 1 through the tanks view ports.
Once done the public will be able to see the Holland 1 clearly.

Other projects include putting more exibits under roof to stave off
corrosion and derteriorization. Expansion so more of the Museum's
collection of objects can be displayed.

The museum had a small building dedicated to deep diving suits.
They mentioned that Phil N. is a friend of the museum. Hi Phil,
you sure get around!

All in all a very nice visit.

Regards,
Ray

Dear Mr Keefer
Thank you for you two e mails. I had passed the first e mail to our Curator
but he is fairly busy at the moment and did not get around to making a
decision, hence the delay in answering.

As public relations/customer services come under my remit It has come back
to me for a reply.

I have had a word with the site supervisor and she will be expecting you on
Sunday 20th June. I have arranged for you to be able to gain access to the
inside of the X24 with the view to taking some photographs. I must state
that but there is a health and safety implications here so we must disclaim
any liability for mishaps. I am afraid that there is no way that you can
get inside the Biber craft as the hatch is sealed with a manakin inside.

I hope you enjoy your visit
Yours sincerely,

George Malcolmson
Business Services Manager.
