Addendum:

On the ambient VBT, there are two issues: venting the increased relative pressure during
ascent and wastage of air during repeated dive cycles.  If the tank is constructed to
withstand explosive pressure, it can maintain the increase in internal pressure relative
to ambient during ascent.  This will save air during recycling.

Or, if air isn't a problem, an overflow valve (as per a dry suit) can be adjusted to
release the increase in internal relative pressure during ascents.
