The 'dobe' is actually the DOWB, or Deep Ocean Work Boat. It originally used fiber optics fed into the crew cabin for viewing, and is well described in Busby's Manned Submersibles. If memory serves, the final analysis on the camera/fiber optics line was that it was a bug, and not a feature.
