I like Dave's idea...though finding a partially silvered mirror might not be immediate (Edmund Scientific or a web search would probably do it, though).  On the other hand,  if there were a swift current topside, a trailing "periscope" wouldn't give you a great idea of where your sub were located underneath.  Nevertheless, all the gear could be deployed 1-2-3.
