Off-topic sort of: request for website
I'm looking for the website of the Idaho Institute of Robotics. It has a
training
program for ROV technicians. The links on the various search engines
give
me a 404.
Thanks.
Submarine stuff: a while back someone was suggesting a concrete
hull. I used to have some old MTS reports, and one thing that was
kicked around in the 60s was concrete hulls. For a while, it was
suggested that supplemental buoyancy be provide by hollow
concrete balls. There's a problem: the balls were porous, and they
would collect water inside until they filled.
A better idea was fiberglass. The idea was a laminate of glass, in
strips
shaped into longitudinal sections of the cylindrical hull. If the
sections were
shaped properly, they'd fit together nicely and stress would be spread
between them to give a good hull.
I wondered how the first submarines were made. Was Bushnell's Turtle
made by a barrel-maker? Was Fulton's Nautilus made that way? I think
the
fiberglass idea arose from historical research into the Turtle.
