Hi - I assume the "Rick" is me, since I live up in Vancouver.  :-)

Betty Pratt Johnson wrote a couple of books on diving in the area.  She's got loads of very useful dive info.   Ask for "141 Dives".  It's not her most current book but it's a valuable start.

Unlike Florida or the Caribbean, our vis up here is usually best in the winter.  It gets up well over a hundred feet in some areas.  I've never dived the Straight so I can't say personally.  One area with great vis is Campbell River and
surrounding areas.
