Re: Trolling motor

Marcel,

I asked the same question about the motor seals in the Minnkota trolling
motors. I called Minnkota and got the following. The seals are made for
trolling use and are made for a depth of about 30 feet. They will probably go
much deeper and I have had people say they have used the seals down to 100
feet of sea water.

I examined the seals on the motor I bought for my Sub and it is a kind of cup
seal in which a spring loaded seal is made on the motor shaft. It looks like
there may be room for two seals but I haven't tried it. Looking at the seal,
it appears that if the seal didn't leak the wear on it would be excessive at
200 psi differential. My opinion is that the seal would not be usable at a
differential pressure of 200 psi. Can you use pressure compensation? If I were
to try to seal the shaft, I would machine my own seal based on O-rings using
teflon or some other durable material. It shouldn't be hard to install.

Good Luck,

Ken Martindale
