There are rules for doing this documented in the ABS standards for example.  In general 
what you are thinking might handle it under steady loads, but its necessary to remember 
that corners like you suggest will develop stress concentrations and flex under cyclical 
loads.  1/2 inch is VERY HEAVY.  Have a look at the web site graphs of relationships 
between thickness, diameter, and length.
