Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Spring steel clips

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that.  There seem to be quite a few options.  Doing a search on Google images for "I Beam clamps" produces millions of others. Might be able to get something here in UK.

Thanks
James

James,

I just noticed there is a second page of Supply Hangers.  On Page 2, third from the top on the left is "Touchdown Beam Clamp" which incorporates a spring steel clip for attaching to the reinforcement ring of the sub.  Click on Media in that box, then click Brochure.  The model # is 550-11e.  The clip can be rotated for either parallel or perpendicular runs.  With this one you wouldn't have to drill any holes in the ribs, but you'd need to do something to prevent the clip from gouging the paint on the ribs.

I'd like to dip several of the spring steel clips in various coatings, leave one untreated, and hang them all above salt water in a container with a lid for a couple of months and see how they resist corrosion.

James,

When you open the site, search for 558-E2 and for 557-2.  The direct links to those are:  http://www.siouxchief.com/Support/Supply-Hangers/Suspensulator.V847I
and

To see all of their pipe support products, click SUPPORT at the top center of the main page, then SUPPLY HANGERS.  That brings up a catalog for that category which is where you can the click "Media" or "View" for a pdf on all the specs for a particular product.

Good luck,
Jim

Hi James,

You might like these if they are available in the diameter you need.  There is a split between the ears so you can spread the unit and pop it over the tubing.
558-E2

The website for the manufacturer is www.siouxchief.com

I bought a pack of 5 of these today for about $2.50 USD in the plumbing supply department at a retail store.  There are several similar products on the website.

Cheers,
Jim

I happened to be up in the roof trusses of a Wal-Mart doing some welding from a scissors lift the other day and I noticed a neat clip that the sprinkler people used to suspend all the pipe for their fire sprinklers. They are brass or bronze, small and have a threaded hole which would be perfect to use on the ribs. I am going to use them on my K-350.

Subject: Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Holes In Ribs?

This may seem a bit counter-intuitive, but the best place to drill holes
in stiffeners, if one must, is actually through the stiffener web.
Stiffeners work by increasing the local moment of inertia in
consideration of the stiffener plus an effective length of the shell to
which it is welded.  The outstand (stiffener flange) actually makes the
greatest contribution to this moment, as compared to material within the
web which is close to the neutral axis of the combined section.  Small
holes are unlikely to make a huge difference, but assuming you have a T
shaped stiffener, is it possible to clamp to the flange without drilling
at all?

Hi All,

Am i ok to drill holes in my reinforcement ribs?  They would be about
8mm in the top part of the "T".  Just a few here and there to hold pipes.

I've finished most of the high pressure plumbing but i need to hold
the pipes down.  I didnt really want to drill into the ribs as it
means more painting, but ive scraped the paint off in places while
working so i have to re-do bits anyway.

The other options are to weld tabs on, or use some brackets of some
sort, but i think easiest is just to bolt through and re paint.

Thanks
James
