Awesome! Thanks for the great info Vance! I'll update the specs momentarily. ~ Douglas

The Mermaids were built by Brüker Shipbuilding in Germany as a belated attempt to capitalize on Perry's success, which they did to a limited degree. There were 5 or 6 of them in the series, I believe. Two lock-outs and one or maybe two deep diving vehicles for the Indian government. M-II was rated at 1000 feet, if I recall correctly. Originally built with a small, flat viewport forward, International Underwater Contractors (Andre Galerne) updated and upgraded the design with a dome segment viewport.

Wow guys, thanks for the great info! Yes Jon, after looking at the book link, I see what you mean, very similar. Good work! Now Vance, you seem to know about the Mermaid II then? Might you know the submersible make and/or model, the maximum operational depth, and the original designers/builders? If I could find this information, I would like to update the stats page.

It's a Kittredge MK-II which is the second generation development of the K-250 we know today.  Note the dive planes and rectangular reinforcement collar for the conning tower.  It's documented on pages 5 & 6 of "Submarines" authored by Kittredge and you can find a copy at http://www.psubs.org/reference/publications/kittredgesubmarines.pdf

Kittredge sold plans for the MK-II so it's possible he did not personally build the vessel you found.  However it's a nice find anyway and I can remember seeing photos of it taken from the road.  When I passed through the keys a couple years ago I kept an eye out for it but never did see it.  Now we know why.
