Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fill Rate & Blow Rate

Hi Cliff,

Thanks.  I particularly wanted to hear about yours since its configuration most closely resembles my own.  I was looking at your drawing and ballast system earlier this morning.  In B, did you mean to say with your MBT's fully flooded instead of purged that the water level is 8" from the apex?  Or am I misunderstanding something?

A. For the R300, the MBT's hold 7.6 scf of air.  They flood in 30 seconds. I have 2" NPT flood openings and 3/4" NPT vent openings.

B. My MBT's are designed to be either fully flooded or fully purged.  With my MBT's fully purged, the water level on my dome is about 8 inches from the apex.  I use my VBT to get neutral and submerge.

C.  At depth, I only use my VBT to surface.  I can, in an emergency, use my MBT'S but I do not like to do this as it generates an uncontrolled ascent and consumes a lot of air.

Gentlemen:

A.  When you are on the surface and ready for your ballast tanks to fill, what fill rate in gallons/liters per minute are you designing for or experiencing?  In general, how long does it take for your tanks to fill to the level you want for initial dive?

B.  How are you determining when you have reached any given percentage of fill?  Are you aiming for neutral buoyancy, slightly negative, or even slightly positive?  If so, how much?

C.  When you are submerged and ready to blow your tanks in order to surface, what blow rate in gallons/liters per minute (of water) are you designing for or experiencing at a given depth?

Thanks,
Jim
