RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fill Rate & Blow Rate

Hi Jim,

I’ll try to answer these if I understand the questions correctly.

(A)    My sub, which has ¾” vent valves, takes about 20 seconds to vent. The MBTs are completely filled with water during a dive.

(B)    The sub is slightly positive with MBTs full of water. Depth is controlled with a vertical thruster.

(C)    I usually don’t blow ballast at depth. This creates a bubble of air that will expand as you ascend and can get out of control. I usually just cut power to the vertical thruster.

Hope this answers your questions.

Greg

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fill Rate & Blow Rate

Gentlemen:

A.  When you are on the surface and ready for your ballast tanks to fill, what fill rate in gallons/liters per minute are you designing for or experiencing?  In general, how long does it take for your tanks to fill to the level you want for initial dive?

B.  How are you determining when you have reached any given percentage of fill?  Are you aiming for neutral buoyancy, slightly negative, or even slightly positive?  If so, how much?

C.  When you are submerged and ready to blow your tanks in order to surface, what blow rate in gallons/liters per minute (of water) are you designing for or experiencing at a given depth?

Thanks,

Jim
