Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Air compensating motors

Vance, Carsten,
I read on Karl's site that he had notched up 3000 hrs (tracking you down Vance)
I presume this was all on the air comp system.
It would be easy to have a duel system. Air compensate & fill the motors with oil.
Keep the modified 1st stage regulator  higher than any of your 4 motors & fill the motors with oil.
Have plastic tubing running off your individual motors to a manifold & then on to
an over pressure valve & the regulator. Fill the lines with oil to near the manifold.
With oil expansion the oil would just move up the tube a bit but the pressure would
remain constant as air would escape out the over pressure valve.
If one motor was leaking you would see it by the oil level in the connecting hoses.
If all the oil leaked out the air would take over the compensation.
Easy to do, set up for air compensation & pour some oil in.
Regards Alan

Karl's experience, and the rust we saw when he tore down and overhauled the propulsion system on Idabel, suggests long-term dampness in the system, but whether from moisture buildup from air charges on his HP air or from minor seepage is hard to tell. I wonder if the use of nitrogen in a stand alone compensation system would be worth a try. And a slow, end to end system flush after diving. With no oxygen left in the system, rust would be held at bay, and the flush might warn you of excess moisture. Beyond that, it's hard to deny his experience. His system works. The oil comp does, too, so it gets back down to a choice.
