Marc,
That was the HMAS Kuttabul they sank killing 21 sailors. It
was a converted ferry. There were three subs involved. Two subs
committed suicide and the one that actually sank Kuttabul also sank,
but I don't know if that was by Allied action or not.
At Madagascar they severely damaged a battleship and sank an oil
tanker. Again, none of the midget sub crews survived.
Later the Japanese used torpedoes modified to accommodate a pilot.
They had some success, and the fate of the pilots was as you would expect.
