The Welman got such scant mention because it was ugly and a loser. It
was tried operationally once and ended with one pilot being captured by the
Germans and three others being saved by the

The reason the X craft and the Chariots worked, and the Welxxx did not,
is that the former were designed and built by people who actually knew
boats and naval operations, while Col. Dolphin had neither of those
qualifications and would not accept advice from anybody who did.
