RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] buoy

David,

It is basically a divers flag and float that I rigged up to a retractable dog leash or clothes line.  The clothes line is longer (30 feet) so I have switched to it.  The divers flag sits in a holder and as I submerge the float keeps the flag on the surface until it reaches the end of its line.  If I submerge to 45’ or so  the foam float compresses to the point where the retractor starts pulling it back to the sub. Because there is no slack in the line I have not sucked the line into the prop yet but it is something I remain cognitive of and if the line is perfectly vertical the flag will drop right into its holder.  Now the tricky part is if I am surfacing where there is possible boat traffic I try to ascend very slowly so the flag can redeploy as it regains buoyancy, unfortunately it also has the effect of dragging the sub up with it so I need to adjust ballast or apply downward thrust as the flag ascends.  I would not try to use it where I was going under things like docks or submerged trees because it would definitely be a hazard. I have photos posted here:  http://www.psubs.org/projects/1249704587/retractablediversflag/

Kyle,

Has your buoy you release when diving you submarine ever proven to be a snag hazard in any way?
