Thanks for the information, and this is what I am thinking about:


Distance to Horizon = 2.072 * SQRT(meter above Sea Level)

For the Eurosub case, this range of vision would be:

Distance to Horizon = 2. 072 * SQRT(0.450) = 1.4 nautical miles (2.6 km)

Now, say a speed boat doing 30 knots is approaching (from below your
horizon). So we must determine the distance when such a speed boat (being
1.8 m tall) is just about to appear above your horizon (as seen within
Eurosub)

D(sb) = Distance from Horizon to Speed Boat

D(sb) = 2.072 * SQRT(1.8) = 2.8 nautical miles (5 km)

Total Distance between Eurosub and Speed Boat = 1.4 nm + 2.8 nm = 4.2 nm
(7.8 km)

Time before Speed Boat reaches Eurosub = (4.2 nm / 30 kts) * 60 min/hr = 
8.4 minutes = 8 minutes and 24 seconds

Let say you are at surface within a narrow Norwegian fjord when this is
about to occur, how long does it take to dive Eurosub (in a worst case
scenario)?

Another, and probably more realistic scenario could very well be a speed
boat entering the scene from an adjacent fjord, and this time the distance
between you and the speed boat is no more than one nautical mile.

In that case you would have less than 2 minutes to dive...
