RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] x prize goes ocean

Vance, all,

You have a good point. A Sub which costs 7.000 Dollar a day is to expensive for many archaeological or biological research projects. Like spaceflight, most research subs are governmental.

So the price for a 500 Metres research sub under 1500 Dollar / day operating cost.

New materials or energy sources could also be an idea.

Nice for the media: fly to the 10.900 Metres deep Marianatrench in a floating sub (not the bulky gasoline airship like Trieste)

Steve Fosset planned such but het tragically died in a plane crash.  I read in an interview with James Cameron that he has also plans in that direction. A team is working on a sub in Australia or N Sealand.

(anybody more info?)

Anyway, All of you should send good idea’s to X- price. Otherwise some students will send in robot ideas………………..

Emile

How about items #1 and #2? Improvement of technology to further ocean exploration. How about readily available, certifiable, reasonably priced and simple manned submersible vehicles.....lots of them.....fleets of them. It's time to get man back in the sea. Not robots.
