It was the German 2
person sub Jago that did the dives ? our NZ GNS
scientists did dives to observe the thermal activity at bottom of lake ? I
supported the project with my ROV ? a 60 Minute program TV doco was featured on the dives including bottom video ?
was most interesting ? Taupo is still an active
volcano so don?t buy lakeside property!!

Taupo is 186 meters
deep.
They monitor thermal venting at
various places in the lake using
submarines at times. I think the
Antipodes had a look down there when
it resided in N.Z. (could be
wrong). Taupo has erupted several times in the
past. Around 2000 years ago it
blew up and was the largest explosion known to man.
The dust clouds
were documented by Chinese & Romans at the time.
There is an active volcano
nearby.
Used to take 2 weeks off every
year & fish round Taupo but haven't been for a while.
Mainly into saltwater fishing
now.

Never felt an
earthquake in Auckland, however there are 50
old volcanoes
here & we are probably due for another one.

are 500 miles away.
Although the
earthquake was of a similar magnitude to Haiti, there wasn't that much
destruction.
Two people
seriously injured, a number of minor injuries.
There are
areas of N.Z. that get earthquakes regularly; I've been in a few minor
ones.
It can be a
bit exciting.
