RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 304 stainless



Brian,
Yes , there is an easy DIY way. Go to www.koslow.com  ( or google Koslow
Scientific )   click on " metal test kits ", scroll down to the basic kit
for telling the difference between  316L and 304. This is the company I
have the most experience with .  I am sure if you did some hunting on the
internet you can find other vendors for a similar product .  
   Using paint or some type of "coating" is not recommended . Stainless
steel acts differently then Carbon steel .  SS must have a constant
exposure to oxygen or it rapidly decomposes in a saltwater enviroment.
Unlike Carbon steel which when you shut off the oxygen you limit the
oxidation process.
