Brian, You are just tempting me to put a torpedo tube on my boat...fun until it circles back around! We did have something called an SSXBT which if I recall meant an expendable submarine launched temperature device (ok I forgot the last part) It was launched in a small tube (as were flares) and gathered temp readings for as long as its wire remained intact. This device first went to the surface before flooding and going to Davy Jones locker.
