Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Nekton Gamma link

Ship leasing down here is probably comparable. A moderate sized ship, say 85 feet(ish) runsAbout $3500/day + consumables (including fuel).  I don't know what Delta Oceanographics gets per day, but I think the customer makes the decision about SOO (ship's of opportunity). Sometimes they have one already, and sometimes they have the sub crew bring one with them.

In the North Sea days, with subs of 8 to 12 tons, this wasn't possible, as the handling equipment was so specialized. Delta and her elder sisters can make do with a pick-up truck and a Boston Whaler, which has done them proud over the years.

I've got to call California and make some trip decisions in the next couple of days. You are welcome to come down anytime. Just say the word. My schedule is.....oh, how shall I say it? Flexible? To say the least.

Vance

Hi Vance. Yes, I know what you mean about Delta being simple and sturdy. I saw it in Moss Landing, Calif. before the crew took off on their contract for MBARI. They've got a big ship ( 110 feet ) they haul it around on.
Sure would be nice to have a support ship like that. ( and contracts to pay for it. )
I imagine it takes a small fortune PER DAY to run something like that, and crew pay, insurance, and all the other stuff required.
Going to Calif. ? No, I'll be staying for now but thanks for the offer. I called this A.M. and left a voice mail for you. If you have a little time before you leave I'd like to drive down and have lunch and a beer.
