[PSUBS-MAILIST] CNG power for subs

Hi All, Hope everybody had a good time at the convention ! Congrats
Vance on your new aquisition !

CNG for subs:

The main objection to having a gasoline engine on a sub is the volatle gas
fumes. I was thinking that it might be advantages to use Compressed Natural
Gas in a regular automotive engine (like a Chevy 350) or whatever would work
size wise in a psub. There is a slight power reduction with CNG but not
much. Also the pressurized tank required would take up a bit more room than
diesel, but since it is pressurized it would function well at depth as far
as keeping seawater out. Another added benifit would be the elimination of
any possible spills into the ocean environment. If one went with a CNG
power it would give you a lot more options with types of engines,
compression ratios would have to be altered however. You can find engines
from the factory designed for CNG otherwise you would need to retro-fit.
