There is no other way to respond to this other than to direct them to
proven designs. The type that you can find in the ABS guidelines or the
PVHO. The same information that worlds best sub builders also rely on.
Actually the best way to deal with them is to let them proceed with
their dreams... but without your help or endorsement. One of three
things will happen:
1. Most will not proceed with fabrication (they will be equally adamant
about doing THAT their way, and the material won't cooperate); end of story.
2. Some will proceed to the point where a minor accident (canopy
cracking during installation) will finally drive home the fact that that
spoilsport (you) might have actually had a point.
3. The tiny remnant will remove themselves permanently from the gene pool.
All positive outcomes.
There is even a fourth possible outcome: the illuminatus in question may
actually have a valid idea, which he proves, thus causing progress.
Some friends of mine were given the task of building an aircraft cockpit
canopy with a larger unsupported area than any ever built before. They
had to switch from the usual Plexiglas to polycarbonate. Word was that
polycarbonate could not be "blown" in the necessary size, with adequate
accuracy. They had no choice but to try, and they eventually succeeded.
