Hi all,
Frankly what would make it
worthwhile to drag Snoopy down a highway for
four days is the
prospect of diving her. Even if this permission issue
is resolved,
a tow basin just doesn't really make for a very thrilling
venue.
The prospect of a barge or the donated use of Sea Hunter seem
to
have disappeared. So an alternative is to head down a day early
and work
in a dive day away at some other spot. It wouldn't be part
of the
group-sanctioned event, but of course if anyone here wanted
to join me
they would be most welcome.
So I have a question
for those of you with local knowledge. Can you
think of an
alternative dive site, not in the immediate vicinity of
the
convention?
Thanks,
Alec

Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fort Pierce - Boat Ramp
Hi
Frank,
While I'm with you 100% on a personal level, when it
comes to a group
activity I have to be proactive and make sure I
don't knowingly put
anyone in a compromising position. I was
more concerned about the
safety divers since they could be impacted
by any restrictions much more
than the subs would be. And
while the subs are classified as a "boat"
in terms of registration
and surface operation, once diving underwater
they would likely be
held to comply with the same restrictions as scuba
divers.
Unless I am sure we are in compliance with regulations
or
restrictions (regardless of the source) I just can't sanction it
as a
group event. However, this doesn't mean individuals
can't make their
own decision about diving when they get down to
Ft. Pierce.
My research has led me back to the Coast
Guard. US CFR Title 33,
Chapter 1, Part 165 gives the Coast
Guard authority to implement safety
and security zones. I
called the Ft. Pierce Coast Guard once again
today, and after a
somewhat confrontational discourse with the front
line ending with
my insistence of being given the contact information of
the
division commander, I was forwarded to the officer of the day
who
told me he was not aware of any safety or security zones within
the
inlet or harbor. He told me he was going to do a thorough
check of any
such restrictions and promised to email me back with
that info.
