A good build diesel electric makes underwater less noise than the sea noise
background..
And if you can hear the torpedohatches of the sub it is in general to late..
But anyway it is made from metal and that can be detected.
I now there is a technology available called gravimeter. They can meassure
with this very expensive liquid helium cooled instruments the gravity field
of the earth and detect local differenes.
Anyway if it is a silver mine some miles away, leaves in the garden in front
off the institut some yards away
or submarines under the northpole..
