Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] The last dance by David Bartsch

Shawn

I have been thinking about these matters myself.

That is, I have been thinking about why design and build a small submarine
if one cannot look out onto the outside, underwater world.

I have also been trying to understand why I should spend a huge amount of
money on an acrylic hemisphere if the maximum visual range would be
limited to a few muddy feet ahead of the boat.

But on the other hand, it's not much smarter to replace transparent
acrylic with an underwater video camera.

Despite my own perplexity in all this, I do believe that almost any
underwater scenery is felt to be more real when observed through an
acrylic dome or porthole compared to a situation where you simply sit and
watch video in real time inside a closed steel compartment hovering above
seabed at 120 ft.

The thing is, watching underwater video in real time can be done at a much
lesser cost by operating a small ROV from the thwarts of a small dory.

So I guess my submarine would not be built, unless I do find a way to
include it all (high-definition or not): porthole, camera, sonar, etc...

Best regards,
Jens Laland
