Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Hull Penetration and Reinforcement
I believe the K250 wouldn't pass certification as a new design today
even though it did in the past. Two reasons I'm aware:
- No means to open the hatch from outside
- The land of the forward viewport is too narrow. The viewport does
have a very substantial ring reinforcing the hole, but the support
area the acrylic rests on is very narrow.
Neither would the Nektons pass with their drilled viewports.
Both designs obviously are well proven and safe, but I guess they lack
a few best practices that hadn't been codified at the time.

Alan,
I have copies of K250 hull #106 certification by ABS (1970), and
K350 by Lloyds Register of Shipping (1980), that George sent me a
number of years ago. So both designs were certified in their time.
I checked the 2010 rules for penetration reinforcement against the
2002 rules and the formulas/text were identical. I believe Cliff
designed the hull calculator spreadsheet from the 2002 rules.
According to the spread sheet, Kittredge's hull construction is
still more than adequate for the operating limits he advertised them
at, including a 2:1 safety margin. In terms of hull penetrations,
the plan specs could be used to run through the various 2010
formulas to determine their adequacy given todays rules.

Hi,
I'm wondering wether the K250 / 350 plans meet ABS specifications
as far as hull
construction is concerned. I have a diagram of the K250 dome /
hatch construction, wich I'm
looking at using as a guidline. Sorry to hear about the calculation
stuff up Frank. I think thats pretty
much parr for the course when attempting something new, especially
when you're thinking outside
the box like you are, things never seems to go smoothly.
