Hi Paul,
I started off looking at exotic steels and wanting to use high
tensiles etc but it comes to availability and price. My rather off-hand
comment on any sub made from 516 / 70 will be OK was I guess a bit flippant but
when you try and find formed heads or other parts of the sub which you want to
weld in then you need to match the steels. 516/70 is easy to find in Nth
America. Carsten is in Europe which has its own supply idiosyncrasies. As Jon
says do the calcs on what you can readily get and what depth you want to get
to. Charpy is generally for cold pressures. -30 or -40 are normally achieved
tests. While you may get that with windchill in the air, the water will never
get there and the sub will only get to water temperature. To design for
lightness the reinforcing rings are best matched in tensile for the shell
properties otherwise you have to go bigger. It is the reinforcing plates that
become an issue for higher spec unobtainium. You can get deeper with higher
specs but then as you have probably seen Carsten now wants bigger windows which
mean thicker and more cost. I would almost start with the size of window you
want and look at the thickness and cost and then determine what depth you
want. For the visibility I wanted the cost of viewports from Stanley was over
$40,000 USD. Now that sat me down and made me question what the hell I
wanted. Hope that helps. Hugh

If I'm not mistaken the yield strength of A516 Gr 70 is 38KSI
whereas S355J2 has a yield strength of 52KSI. This, according to Emile, would
decrease the operating depth. Also, I am curious how the Charpy compares.
Is charpy at all important in sub design?

There will probably be tables to compare the steel.
The 355 stands for the yield strength in N/mm2 (Ultimate
tensile strength 520 N/mm) It is very common steel ; exotic material will
make the sub more expensive and probably more difficult to weld.
Lower or higher yield strength decrease or increase the dive depth.
Pipes are even here in Inch sizes! The other problem is that you
need just very short pieces and you have to buy lengths. Go with rolled plate!.

I am trying to evaluate the prospect of building the new Eurosub
here in Canada. Does anyone know if an ASME or ASTM equivalent exists for the
steel that this sub is made of? It is S355J2, a German standard if I'm not
mistaken. How might I account for any differences in thickness, overall pipe /
end cap diameter and steel engineering properties if I hope to build this sub
which uses metric pipe sizes and a steel standard that I don't
believe is available here either.
