[PSUBS-MAILIST] One last major sonar discovery for 2009

To all: This one comes from Jens Layland

The transducer for solids used as my broadband voice transmitter can also function as a passive hydrophone! (A side by side comparison needs to be performed but if this works just slightly less as effective as a piezo element based hydrophone, simply increasing the amplification of the incoming signal would be all that would be needed to level the playing field.)
This means that only a single transducer is really needed and that only two wires could be used for the thru hull connection. This would be accomplished within the electronics enclosure by selecting the inputs and outputs by using relays. A single amplification channel could also be used in this manner thus reducing the overall cost of the system.
This transducer for solids is said to be omni directional in its beam pattern. For passive sonar a more directional hydrophone would be needed, but for underwater communications, this would be all you would need.

                                                                                Happy New Year All!
