Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] RFC - Standard Thru-Hull Electrical Connector

Thanks Jon! Responding to the other comments so far... Seems to me the Ikelites are something I'd use on outboard cans for lights or cameras, but not the pressure hull. Al, I already have the OTS connectors on hand thanks to Dan, but thanks for the information. It's curious they use a 4 pin, because only two of the pins are connected. What I plan to do is solder the OTS cable to the Subconn pigtail and RTV over on top. I've had the same arrangement for years on my comms without incident.

Thanks,

Alec

*** REQUEST FOR COMMENT ***
***************************

1. Purpose.
To standardize at least one bulkhead connector on small submersibles
for practical and safety reasons.

2. Introduction.
There is a clear practical and safety advantage to standardizing on a
hull (bulkhead) connector among a diverse group such as PSUBS. For
example, at the next PSUBS convention a standard connector would allow
sharing of underwater communications equipment between participants.
Such standard would also facilitate the adoption of home-built devices
if those devices were also fabricated to mate with a standard
connector.

3. Proposal.
Adoption of Subconn web mateable connectors as follows:

Subconn Part #: BH4F - screws into the hull and has 4 female contacts
outside, ordinary leads on the inside.

Subconn Part #: IL4M - Male plug and outside cable.

Subconn Part #: DLSA-F/DLSA-M - OPTIONAL - A plastic locking sleeve
for BH4F/IL4M to prevent disconnect if there is movement in the cable.

Subconn Part #: DC4M - OPTIONAL - A blank plug that protects the
penetrator if you dive without anything connected to it.

Specification sheet available at:
http://www.subconn.com/filer/1031/Standard_Circular_4_Contacts.1673263891164403.pdf

4. Justification.
Standard off-the-shelf comms such as OTS or Divelink require only 2
conductors for their transducers. This proposal is to adopt a 4 contact
connector so we could also plug in David Bartsch's combined comms and
hydrophone. Or one could combine a comms transducer with a depth sounder
(2 conductors each).

5. Requirements.
 None.

6. Dependencies.
 None.

7. Enforcement.
This is a voluntary standard.

8. Comment Deadline - 1/18/2010

9. Comment Evaluation.
All comments will be evaluated for potential modification of the
proposed standard.
