I remember thinking about that many, many years ago (good grief, it must
have been high school). The technical hurdle I couldn't get past was
getting rid of the exhaust gases. They can't be vented or stored onboard
unless you recompress them, which would rob you of a great part of the
combustion energy. So, as Brian said electric is good.

Hi Stewart,    Welcome to the group !  Have you figured out how to
protect
your metal detector from the pressure of the water at depth?

As far as running an engine underwater I think you would consume the air
in a scuba tank in a matter of minutes depending on how deep you are.
Electric power would be a better choice.  You could run a generator on
the surface and run a ambilical cord if you didn't want to use
batteries.

Hi All... I guess I should introduce myself! :) My name is Stewart and I
am a long time "lurker" I've been interested in all things "interesting"
related to marine vehicles for a long time.... Hydrofoils, Submarines,
Submersibles etc I own my own Ski boat which I'm rebuilding at present.
My family has had a machine shop since the 1930's and my grandad was an
engineer on Sunderland and Catalina flying boats during ww2... I'm a
self employed IT consultant who also has skills and experience with
electronics since the age of about 7! :)

At the moment im building a "Gold/metal detector kit" called the
goldpic... It's a PIC controlled Pulsed induction metal detector... IE

This is my first time with a question... So please bear with me...

An Idea I have had running around in my head was making a small 1 person
"scuba scooter" to propel a diver under water... And while there are
plenty of these on the market my idea expands on them a little...

My idea is a 2 stroke petrol powered neutrally buoyant scooter that a
person lays on....

My main question is, using a tank of compressed air, would it be
possible to power a 2 stroke motor while it is at a depth of up to 5 or
so metres underwater? I wouldn't like to go deeper than that if I was
skin diving with it... Scuba diving say 12 metres... but as depth
increases I know keeping the water out becomes more of an issue...

How would you seal the exhaust so that it allows exhaust gasses out
under pressure but not allow water in? some kind of ball/gravity valve?
The rest of the issues are simple compared to that I feel...


Also as a simple "emergency ascend" feature (also if the motor
compartment floods) I was going to use a self inflating life jacket/CO2
cartridge style arrangement...


This is not designed to go "DEEP" and is only to be used for quick
commuting to a dive site from the shore with dive tanks on... then ill
anchor it and dive... and then use it to get back to shore.... It will
be man portable and have 1 maybe 2 standard scuba tanks under it...
