Enlarging your MBTs for a greater reserve of ballast does not mean that you must necessarily use all of the available capacity all the time, but having the capacity available allows you to select your operating waterline as circumstances dictate. Also, larger MBTs which are used at partial capacity impart a higher center of buoyancy than a smaller tank at full capacity, increasing surface stability.
