One of the key factors in shortening the life of lead-acid batteries in
particular is being kept on a low state of charge or made to wait
between discharge and recharge. With a BV or RTG there's continuous
charging taking place, at a rate admittedly much lower than peak load -
the perfect "keep-alive" system.
