Hi Marc,
Had to look up what it was on Wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor
I knew them as proximity sensors.
I wonder wich would be the most reliable or cheapest?
I had a dive torch with a magnetic switch that wasn't that reliable,
& potting the Hall effect sensor seems easiest.

Better yet, Hall-effect sensors. No moving parts - can be completely potted - should last forever.
