RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] guide to hydrophone construction

This I do not know, but, if one were to investigate "fleet boats" which covers the Gato and similar diesel submarines of the US submarine fleet used during WWII, there is quite a write up on the systems used by our navy at this time. A very great read.
Most systems used a pair of hydrophones that were mounted on a wide pole mounted bar. This bar was trained or turned and the two hydrophone inputs compared to each other. When both incoming signals were equal in signal strength the unit was trained on the surface contact. Crude, but it seemed to work well enough.
The U 505 pictures available on line do give clear pictures of the hull mounted hydrophone array this boat used at the time. I think again that a comparison would have been made between these fixed mounted hydrophone in order to derive at a "best bearing to detected contact."
