RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] retractable buoy

Jay,

I agree with you a hundred percent on everything you just said, no problem
at all!

That's why I chose to talk about something else in my previous mail.

My idea is to send nothing but old fashion, narrow-band audio frequency
(300-3000Hz) through any cable coming from a submerged vessel and running
up to a communication buoy.

If you need to broadcast, then modulate the VHF carrier frequency within
the buoy, amplify, and finally put everything into a fine-tuned whip
aerial.

Simply stated, your VHF equipment is actually riding the waves a few
hundred feet above your head, and you're just lucky enough to have a
microphone with a very long lead reaching all the way up to the buoy where
the mike's jack-plug is located.

Best regards,
Jens Laland

** Jens,
** VHF radio is ~144 MHz. and there is a significant signal loss with an
** impedance miss match which occurs when the insulative material in a
** typical
** radio antenna coax compresses with depth. Harder core material can be
** used
** but then you have issues with the minimum acceptable bend radius and it
** will
** not coil on a small drum suitable for most PSUBs.
