Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Fla. Visibility [was: Continuing saga of homebrewed Chinese sub]

Hi, Joe - so many aviation fans here.  Probably motorcycle owners, too.

The sub ops here in Vancouver encouraged more than a few of us into a rethink of our design plans.  Nothing beats actually doing it to clarify issues.

I've almost finished my sub-building shop in our back yard.  It is so important to have close access.

In terms of vis, my experience with the Keys was, at most, 35 ft. of vis.  That was in Pennekamp around Christ of the Abyss.  I was surprised because it was so far offshore that runoff shouldn't have been a problem.

Rick,

Nice to hear from you as well.

No, I shelved the sub in to return to my aviation roots some time ago. In fact, I am on the eve of finally setting up the shop in the coming weeks to get started.

The only reason for the above, was the logistical realities of my workspace / location from now until retirement in 11 years. I simply am having trouble even getting to visit my assembly site / second home.

Water clarity in Florida is dependent on wind conditions and ground water runoff. I remember a time when most inlets to the ocean on the east coast were champagne clear, those days are now few and far between. Jay is in a better position to answer ref: the springs. I will attend if family obligations allow.

Joe - haven't seen you in a while.  Still working on your sub concepts?  Any models?

BTW, I assume you're coming to the Fla. meet next year.  Any good, really clear places to operate PSUBS?  I do know that the Fla. springs are supposed to be something else.  Salt water would be preferable but I'm a vis freak.  Jay seemed to have a good handle on things when he was discussing next year's meet.

Jay?  Good vis?  Wrecks would be fantastic, if you can arrange one  :-)   Let's see: great vis, safe launching facilities, no current, a safe wreck, a hotel nearby, easy transportation distance, great food, no hurricanes.

No problem.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Jay,

Just happened to pop in again on you guys. I must say that from what I've seen from "my chair here" of the Vancouver meet, that it looks like it was the PSUBS equivalent of landing on the moon! How are you guys going to top that one?!

The one redeeming quality of the Chinese fellow's anemic efforts, is that it is indicative of a much changed world. Give this guy an "A" for his audacious spirit, and wonder what he might do with our level of opportunity and material availability. Otherwise, if he were located here in the good ole USA, I'd think him a fool.

Frank,

I tried capturing it but had no luck with the various different programs that I hold.  Agree that it would be good to have a copy for future purposes.

Hi Jay. We should save that video on the psub site for obvious reasons.
