In looking at a nearby water tower, I noticed that the full mark indicator was located within a glass tube and was near the bottom of the side of this tank. In visualizing how this simple indication was performed, I could see a float with a small cable tied to this bright red indicator ball. As the water level went down, this cable would pull this indicator ball higher in the glass tube toward the empty level at the top of this tank. Could such a simple level indication be used for the variable ballast aboard a submarine? Perhaps just a lit site gage on the tanks side?
