RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Roll Roll Roll your Boat

Yep those would be nice for a new sub, but mine already had all the bits on it like conning tower and skids, and I didn't have one yet. I also planned on making one in Portland as part of my welding training.  Also my relative in Portland already has two pipe welding stands for making hyperbaric chambers, so there ya go.  After rolling my sub this way I can see that we don't have to have a pipe rolling stand, even for a new built sub, since all you need is a few long boards and four wedges you can clamp or screw on. When you want to roll it just remove the wedges, and roll away.   The only trouble with that way is you have the boards in your walking area.  But as I like to say, beggars can't be choosers. ;}

The sub rolled over nice and easy, much like rolling a stack of potatoes or a hay bale.  It dreams of being a hydrobatic sub. But no worries mates, I won't monkey with it that badly, since I don't have a five point harness planned. ;}

I've finally removed the starboard thruster with carbon arc, so I will have no real trouble rolling the sub up on the other side. That carbon arc is way to cool. Just don't forget to turn on the compressed air or your SOL.

Pipe welding stands are the easiest unpowered way to roll the hull. You could build them using heavy castors mounted upside down on a couple of I-beams, for instance. Considering how far you've already gone without, I'd wonder if it was necessary anymore.

My buddy the nuclear qualified welder perfected the art of turning himself into a pretzel while welding overlays inside my hull. I had to buy the Aleve. Not fun.

How does one roll there sub without a A frame lift or tube roller with out denting it?  My dad's answer would almost alway be "very carefully".  I have plans to build a A frame lift in Portland, Oregon, but need to finish the major clean up blasting before I go to Portland with sub in tow behind the trusty sled dog.

Some time back I slowly rolled the sub onto wood supports so I could blast and inspect the bottom properly.  After blasting the hull looks quite good with only a couple very minor rust voids that need to be filled with bubble gum.  Thank goodness I don't have to weld the whole bottom surface of the sub, like Vance did.  I know I need welding practice, but not that bad. ;}
