Brian,
I intend to install this very system aboard a small ambient sub. The idea I have in mind is to select an omni-dirrectional hydrophone when the system is trained aft (All you would hear at this location is your own boat anyway) and train to better isolate biologic and boat traffic only when desired or when needed to avoid collisions.
During normal operation, this narrow beam width (which has yet to be verified) and labor intensive search would require too much submarine operator intervention to be practical. (You are quite busy already!)
For a 1 atm submarine, the number of thru hulls is quite large being some 36 for this system.
Let me finish and fully test this before we draw any conclusions as to its usefulness. It may turn out simply to be a desire to in a small way duplicate the highly sophisticated sonar's I was privileged to operate and maintain while on active duty.
The basic idea of stator brush selectivity of hydrophones could perhaps be changed to incorporate a selective area of coverage while providing very accurate contact bearing determinations. (An intensified search covering a small geographic area )(straight ahead and perhaps 60 degrees wide?)
During underwater communications sessions, the ability to train to a dirrection more in line with the transmission source would allow for a higher ability to recieve and interpret incomming voice messages.

David,
Why are you think they will not have any use on small submersibles?
Brian
Jon, Having been in the Navy as a sonar technician, I was really curious if I could actually pull off a trainable passive sonar system. In that such a system would require almost constant investigation, it would really have little or no use aboard these really small submarines but perhaps some larger vessels could see a use for such a system. It is really just a personal challenge that I undertook this project. It would still be interesting to see how effective and accurate this set up will be.
