RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] CAD question

Hi Scott,

From what I've seen and worked on, for most of are sub designs I personally would suggest, Rhino Marine, Autodesk Inventor, or Solidworks. Some nice work is being done on Google sketch up as well.  I have a friend that uses an older version of AutoCAD for his 2D electrical schematics and he's also uses Solidworks for most every thing else.  I showed him how he could also do his 2D electrical schematics in Solidworks.  But it was more of a matter of old habits die hard.

Autodesk Inventor has come along way in the last few years, and it now competes very well with Solidworks for 3D work and what not.  There are also sorts of plug ins for both Solidworks and Inventor, of things line FEA and CAM.  I find that the many of the guys that used to use AutoCAD tend to graduate to Inventor, since they are both from Autodesk, and use many of the same terminology.

I was impressed with what Solidworks could do by a injection molder/CAD wizard, when he design some injection molded part for me, back before Autodesk was really serious about 3D.  I would go with what is a financial option for you, and if possible what your friends use, so you can learn from them.

I run AutoCAD 14 for looking at and converting many AutoCAD files, and Solidworks 2007.  I had a friend that used to design robotic arms for Schilling Robotics, one of which is on Alvin, that installed SW 2009, and didn't like it, and went back to 2007.

These days they have all sorts of sales on CAD software.

Regards,

Szybowski

Does anyone know what CAD software works best for designing subs? I wouls really like something that calculates weights, electrical scematics, and pressure tolerances if possible. Help?
Thanks,
Scott
