Hi David. Ya, seems like a small compressor would work pretty good in an
ambient sub. It could be possible to have a fairly long snorkel like a hose and
float, so an ambient could cruise around maybe 10 feet deep while sucking air
down. Then too, it might work to use one of those hooka things. I think
they have about 30 feet of hose on them with a scuba mouth piece for shallow
diving without tanks. I remember seeing one of those that was self contained on
a little innertube style float, with three hoses for the divers. I often
considered having a tether with air and power supply running from the sub to a
surface boat. It would limit your depth, but you could use almost unlimited
power like 220 volt motors and some really bright lights, plus with an air
supply, your dive time would be greatly extended like if you were performing
some work task or doing a long term observation of some sea life. It's still
something that could be added to any little sub. I'm not sure how long a tether
could be until it got to be too much to drag around, and I can see where in some
cases it might present an entanglement hazard, but there may be circumstances
where it could be a benefit.
I'm hoping we see more people building ambient subs. There's not much more
to be seen at 100 feet that you won't see at 30 feet. Frank
