RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Recycling Lead

Frank,  Your near the coast there in Cali, I would guess there is more people trying to build sail boats there, that want the lead then up here in the sticks.  Up hear the main demand for lead is for ammo, so we can stock up, before we can't get it any more and keep the feds out of are hair, as well as keep the deer jerky coming. Of course with all the modern weaponry now a days, we wouldn't stand a chance. But don't tell them that.

Sounds like we might need to start designing are subs to have steel weights, instead of lead weights, like the KSS.  With lead being 11340 kg/m3, and steel generally being 7850 kg/m3, we would need to add about 44% to the volume of the steel we install to match the weight of lead, if I've got my figures right. Or we can go the other way and just use gold.

I would cut the steel weights into the size I want, then ease all the sharp edges, weld on some 316 SS taps to attach the weights to the sub, then hot dip galvanize or high zinc epoxy paint it. Then coat all that with a spray on rubberized coating like you can buy in cans at the automotive parts store or rhino coat it and your done.

Regards,

Szybowski

Hi Brent. I contacted a few tire shops near me, and each had a guy who came and bought the old wheel weights. One guy said he got $3 a pound but  I kind of doubt that. Way more than I was willing to pay. My best guess is 1800 LBS. for mine. I gathered about 100 pounds of them and did some melting. Pretty easy to get clean lead bricks. Anyway, I found a guy who has about 2000 lbs. in the small ingot shape, and he's selling me 1500 lbs. for $350. The rest he's saving for shot reloads. Ebay has several places at about $1 per pound. It's getting hard to find lead now in Calif. Frank D.
