RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Snoopy project page
Wally is a friend of mine who is an engineer and designs navy subs. He's
spent a lot of time on real subs, but the navy doesn't let the engineers
drive the boats, so we went to a lake and he took Snoopy for a spin. We
made a movie of the outing with the help of Greg Cottrell as cameraman,
and I use the movie in presentations to school kids. In explaining the
sub to Wally on camera, the point is really to explain it to the kids in
the audience by proxy. Of course Wally knew all about subs to begin
with, but that doesn't seem to occur to the kids.
I'm a crappy actor, but there are two scenes I'm really happy with. One
is a collision with a steel cable, which catapults the sub backwards.
It's a good demonstration of how little visibility a pilot has from the
coning tower. The camera was in the bow viewport and saw the cable
coming, but the first I knew of it was when I heard the twang. Also a
good demonstration of driving a sub too fast, and I've since slowed
down. The other is a surfacing scene shot from above. We couldn't have
got that shot if we'd planned it. Greg was lying face down on a floating
dock with the camera housing pointing down and I spied his profile
against the sky. That sounds easy, but between the murk in a lake and
the distortion of the dome, picture something very hazy indeed. Anyway I
blew MBT's at depth with the faint outline of the floating dock above,
hoping to come up next to it rather than underneath. I got double lucky;
I came up literally inches from the dock, and Greg spotted me on the way
up and panned to perfection even though he couldn't look through the
viewfinder. The sub slowly materializes into view, and the camera
follows it up right through the surface - <big grin on pilot> - then
back underwater as the sub bobs up and down. Greg deserves some sort of
PSUBS Oscar for that one!
Although "Wally's first dive" is too long for Youtube, the two scenes
above are pasted in a short here:

This is not new, I know lots you have seen it in the past.

I just added a project page for my K250, in the hope a bunch of photos
might be of use to the folks building or restoring K boats. Here's the
